How to create a mystical image

This is a tutorial by Fredric Melchersson. How to create a cool and mystical image of Michael Jackson, a easy tutorial. Follow the steps and you will have a fine result.

Step 1

To begin you need to download this picture: Michael Jackson Image and open the image in Adobe Photoshop so we can start. The picture is in 500x500.

Step 2

Now you need to brush out the background in the image. Delete everything except the hair and the face. Select the 'Brush Tool' and start paint with a brush with 0% in hardness. You need not be so picky when you do this. Just start paint the background, so it looks like this:

Now we need change the contrast and the light in the picture. To do that we need to change the 'Levels' (CTRL+L), you can also use the path 'Image -> Adjustments -> Levels'. When you have the Levels windows open you can adjust the contrast. Set the input level to: 47, 1.00, 255. You can test yourself forward if you want the image to be darker or lighter, but don't make the image too light because then the lines of the face will be visible.

Step 4

Now we need to create a new layer (CTRL+SHIFT+N) so we can create a shadow so the image gets a bit mystical.

Step 5

Now when you have created a new layer you need to select the 'Brush Tool' and start to paint over those spots you want to be darker. I choosed to paint over half the face. Select a brush with a hardness of 0%, because we don't want to have a black line in the middle of the face.

Step 6

Now we are soon done. Now we are going to change the opacity on the layer you did in 'Step 5'. You need to select the layer and then draw then set the opacityn to 54%. You can now see that the image starts to look very good.
